Who are the seniors we serve?

Generally people in the US who're over 60 years of age are regarded as seniors; and US law and society recognize the special needs of senior citizens. Nearly 54 million Americans receive Social Security benefits: 21% of married couples and 43% of single seniors count on Social Security for 90% of their income. The average person receives about $1,413.08 a month -- which isn't a lot of money. According to one source, median income for seniors 65-74 is $36,320.

While seniors in general are a sizable population, Baisden Enterprises Ltd, with Its Elegant Senior Project, has chosen to target the Baby Boomer segment of the senior market. Boomers (people born between 1946-1964) began to reach age 62 in 2008. Baby Boomers are heading into retirement at about 10,000 a day! This population is growing faster than the general working age population. They also have an increasing life expectancy after age 65.

Yet, this group has not done enough to prepare for retirement and might not have much more in disposable Income than others. Research by the Insured Retirement Institute (IRI) found that 24% of Baby Boomers have no retirement savings. Of the 55% of Baby Boomers who have some retirement savings, 42% have less than $100,000. In fact, the vast majority of senior boomers don't have sufficient savings to retire full-time at age 65 with their pre-retirement standard of living (Sightlines report issued by the Stanford Center on Longevity (SCL). As a result, the report noted, workers approaching retirement will either need to work beyond age 65, reduce their standard of living, or do some combination of the two.

Baby Boomers could be a large and rapidly growing community for the Elegant Senior Project. This community will not likely shrink, because of the increasing life expectancy of Baby Boomers. The downside is that Boomer seniors are not likely to be financially well-off – which has implications for their purchasing power.

Despite their longer life expectancy over previous generations, US baby boomers as a group are not in the best of health. According to a study in JAMA (Dana E. King, MD, MS; Eric Matheson, MD, MS; Svetlana Chirina, MPH; et al, JAMA Internal Medicine, 2013;173(5):385-386. doi:10.1001/jamainternmed.2013.2006):

Baby Boomers have:

· Higher rates of chronic disease

· More disability

· Lower self-rated health than members of the previous generation at the same age.

The findings from the present study documenting poorer health status and increased rates of obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and hypercholesterolemia support an increased likelihood for continued rising health care costs and a need for increased numbers of health professionals as Baby Boomers age.

Given the link between positive healthy lifestyles and subsequent health in this age group, the present study demonstrates a clear need for policies that expand efforts at prevention and healthy lifestyle promotion in the Baby Boomer generation.
